The Surgery Process
Plastic Surgery Process and Recovery
At New York Breast Plastic Surgeons we take immense measures to ensure that your plastic surgery process goes as smoothly as possible.
After your procedure has been discussed and scheduled, our staff will guide you through the process and pre and post-operative steps and care.
Prior to your plastic surgery, it’s important that you be in the best health possible. Your primary physician must give you a clean bill of health for any medical condition prior to surgery.
Pre-Operative Care and Preparation
The following can help ensure a smooth, uncomplicated process:
- Please inform us of any and all medications and supplements you are currently taking.
- Please provide an accurate medical history.
- It is imperative that smoking and alcohol be avoided for at least two weeks prior to surgery.
- For elective plastic surgery, you should be at an optimal, stable weight.
- You must be well hydrated prior to the surgery.
- Arrangements should be made for pick-up and drop-off after the surgery; you will not be discharged otherwise.
- If you plan to be alone during your recovery, ensure that making meals will be easy so as to minimize any activity. We can help you with travel and lodging if needed.
- Driving should be avoided after surgery until directed by our physicians.
- Begin minimal activity a few days after surgery. It is important that you comply with these instructions. Do not resume regular activity unless approved by our physicians.
- If you are an extremely active person start slowly and pace yourself. Avoid over-demanding programs until receiving our doctors' approval. However, it is extremely important to begin some type of activity at a reasonable time period after your plastic surgery.
Bathing
Do not soak or shower for a few days after surgery. You may sponge bathe ensuring no sutures are wet for an extended period of time. Our physician will advise when you can bathe.
Recovery and Set Backs
It's normal to have some drainage after your plastic surgery. However, thick, opaque in color or foul smelling drainage, especially accompanied by fever, must be reported to us immediately. In fact, fever at any time contact us immediately. These setbacks can usually be handled using antibiotics.
Pain
Discomfort after plastic surgery is normal. Our doctors will prescribe pain medication to ensure that you are comfortable during your recovery. You should only take pain medication as indicated and prescribed. Pain medication can also make you constipated so take a stool softener.
Results
It takes a few months after surgery, and sometimes a whole year, to see the final results from your plastic surgery procedure. You must be patient. Don't be discouraged during your recovery; it takes time for the swelling to go down and for your body to make these adjustments.
Our office staff is always available to answer any questions regarding plastic surgery, the procedures and pre and post operative preparations.
